Most serious gym-goers know about DMAA and DMHA — two synthetic stimulants that have developed a cult following in the pre-workout world for the sheer intensity of energy they deliver. We won't get into the full legality debate here, but the short version is that both are banned in multiple countries and largely unavailable through mainstream retail.

What we will talk about is DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) — a naturally occurring compound found in trace amounts in the brain, used in some pre-workouts as a legal, milder alternative. DMAE supports cognitive function and plays a role in acetylcholine synthesis, the neurotransmitter associated with learning and memory.

Dark Energy pre-workout is technically classified as a "research product," which is part of how it navigates certain regulatory restrictions. It's used as a stimulant by weightlifters and is built around six core ingredients: DMHA, DMAA, DMAE, Caffeine, Taurine, and Beta-Alanine. Together, they create a pre-workout that hits harder and faster than most mainstream options.

Each container holds 30 scoops, and the recommended maximum is one scoop per session, which equals about 12,660mg (12.66 grams) of mixed powdered ingredients. If you're new to it, start with half a scoop and work up based on your tolerance. Don't exceed the recommended dose.

Here's a breakdown of what's in each scoop and what it actually does:

  • DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine) and DMHA (1,5-dimethylamylamine) — The headline ingredients. Despite being present in relatively small amounts — DMHA at around 1.57% (200mg) and DMAA at around 0.4% (60mg) — these two are responsible for most of the stimulant effect: sharp focus, a strong energy surge, and the euphoric feeling that makes certain pre-workouts feel different from caffeine alone.
  • DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) — Present at around 5% (750mg). Research is still limited, but DMAE is believed to improve cognitive function by increasing acetylcholine levels in the brain.
  • Caffeine Anhydrous — At around 3% (400mg), this is the processed, waterless form of caffeine. It blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, reducing fatigue and sharpening focus. It also increases dopamine and glutamate activity — which is a big part of why caffeine feels motivating rather than just alerting.
  • L-Taurine — At around 15% (2,000mg), taurine is one of the most abundant amino sulfonic acids in the body. In a pre-workout context, it's used to temporarily boost endurance and support faster metabolism.
  • Beta-Alanine — At around 25% (3,200mg), Beta-Alanine increases carnosine levels in the muscles, which buffers acid buildup during high-intensity exercise. This delays fatigue and extends endurance — and it's responsible for the tingling sensation (paresthesia) some people feel after taking it.
  • Citrulline Malate 2:1 — The largest ingredient by volume at 47% (6,000mg). Citrulline is an amino acid that boosts nitric oxide production, improving blood flow and pump. The malate component improves absorption and bioavailability.
  • GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) — At 0.3% (50mg), GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that reduces nervous system overactivity. In this formula, it takes the edge off the stimulant intensity — reducing anxiety without blunting the energy.

Dark Energy comes in six flavors: Blast, Gummy, Purple, Rocket, Orange, and Tropical. Availability is limited and legal restrictions vary by country, so it isn't always easy to source.

If you can't get Dark Energy or want a legal alternative, here are three solid options:

  • Jack 3D has a very similar ingredient profile and comparable flavors. It also contains creatine monohydrate and 2-aminoisoheptane HCL — a DMAA-like stimulant that delivers a similar energy and focus effect. You can find Jack 3D from USPLabs here — 45 servings for under $40.

  • Krank3D is a more advanced formula built around L-Arginine HCL for better circulation and pump, Borocysteine for vasodilation, and Red Wine Extract (which contains glycerol) for muscle hydration and volume. It also contains 2-Aminoisoheptane HCL (DMHA). It's slightly pricier at $49.95 for 25 servings, but the formula justifies it. Get Krank3D by Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals here in six flavors.

  • Dust X by Blackstone Labs is a DMHA-based pre-workout in the same category as Krank3D. It comes in a striking package, delivers solid energy and focus, and is priced at $44.99 for 25 servings.

One thing worth clarifying: despite the DMAA and DMHA in the formula, Dark Energy shouldn't cause the stimulant-related side effects you might expect — elevated heart rate, blood pressure spikes, excessive alertness — at least not for most people. That said, individual response varies a lot based on caffeine tolerance and total dosage. Stick to the label. If you're sensitive to stimulants, start with half a scoop and see how your body responds before going all in.
